The average student spends countless hours inside the classroom, not mentioning the hours spent for extracurricular activities. Now that my daily routine of waking up, going to school at eight o’clock in the morning, going home after the bell rings at 3:06, doing homework (although that is usually at the bottom of the list), sleeping, and then waking up all over again is now about to end, it seems like the past four years at University High School were nothing but just a few seconds. I entered Uni High unsure of my course. I never thought I would join the tennis team or become a sports writer during my Freshman year. I never really wanted to be anything. What Uni High has given me over the years are the opportunities to participate in many things, and the opportunities to feel passionate about something. For the first time, I wanted to excel in something particular. I entered the tennis team with zero experience. I worked relentlessly to reach the level necessary to become a good competitor, and in my final year, I became a captain. The same goes for becoming the Sports Editor. Writing for the sports page made me feel good about being the entire school’s “Informant,” when it came to athletic events. I enjoyed the festive atmosphere whenever there was a match to be covered. I enjoyed listening to the coaches as they gave accounts of the teams’ individual feats, and I enjoyed capturing the exact moments of the athletes’ dynamic movements with the camera. The things that Uni High has given me have had a great impact in my life, and I’m very thankful to the teachers that pushed me to do better. The opportunities present at other high schools are not as good as those present at Uni High. Despite the budget cuts, Uni High has always found ways to keep its various programs going. So, as a Senior who has seen what differences Uni High can make in people’s lives, I advise the underclassmen to try the many things offered at school. Try to join a sport, and if you’re not athletic, try a club (we have more than 50). There won’t be many chances after high school to be involved in these things. Most importantly, the opportunities offered at Uni may not be offered free somewhere else. Let me leave the underclassmen with this sentiment: always enjoy your time at Uni, because it shoots by faster than a bullet. Do not let yourself settle for things. Instead, strive to be the best in whatever you do, and your hard work will surely pay off.
