Gay Marriage: Should It Be Voted On?

Since homosexuality became a present issue, people have developed opinions and have chosen sides on the topic of gay marriage. The question about whether or not the American population should be allowed to vote on the issue of gay marriage has been a constant question.

I cannot deny that I have friends that are homosexual/bisexual, and this gives me a particularly close attachment to the topic. In spite of that, I’ve still had various people be very open about their opinion of gay marriage to me.

One of the most controversial factors following this topic is whether or not gay marriage should be legalized in the United States.

There are various countries that legalize marriage between same sex couples and as far as I’ve noticed, their communities haven’t fallen apart. No angry god has come down from heaven to punish them, none of their buildings have collapsed when a gay couple said “I do,” and no one  member of their massive populations have gone out of their way to make these people miserable. The world kept on spinning.

However, our very conservative country has developed a phobia towards the idea that two people that are of the same sex, whether it’s their business or not, are in love with each other and, therefore, wish to spend the rest of their lives together. Just like any other two people who are in love would do.

One of the countries that has recently legalized gay marriage is Spain. My brother, who is 47 years old, lives in Spain and is happily married to his partner. His male partner. It was absolutely no shock to me, or anyone else in my family, that they decided to get married. They had been living together for a while and were in love. I was very happy to hear that my brother was happily married.

I was not so happy to hear, however, that if they came to visit me in my home in Florida, not only would they be scrutinized for being married, but they would also not be considered legally married. They would lose all of the rights they had gained in Spain as a married gay couple. But no one would hesitate to consider them an omen upon our country.

The infamous Phelps family is not in the slightest way shy about their hate towards the gay community. As a matter of fact, they believe and have made it blatantly obvious, that the reason why our soldiers are killed at war is because God is punishing our country for being “gay-friendly.”

Let’s hope they never go to Spain.

Despite all of the evidence that the world will not be ripped apart from the core when two gay people show their affection, our country still feels afraid or offended that gay people fall in love just like everyone else. No one should ever have to go through the pain of oppressing their love. It is, I believe, the right of any human to love who they want. It should not be left up to voters (as if they were choosing a president) whether or not people should be given their basic human rights. It’s not as if anyone has had to vote on straight marriage.
