Turning 16 is a huge mile stone for teenagers, not only are they in the prime of their teens years, but they also get to get the long wished for drivers license and buckle in their new car and drive off. But for most parents it can be a tricky situation.
According to teendriversource.org, motor vehicle crashes are the number 1 cause of death among teenagers. With this chilling statistic it is crucial for young adults to have a safe car that they will have easy control of and that feel safe in. Just Google “safe cars for teens” and any website will tell you that the best car for a new driver or any driver under the age of 19, is a mid size vehicle. Teenagers do not have enough driving experience to handle a huge SUV and the sporty car that all teenagers dream of is not safe enough and very easy to speed in. Also it’s important to buy a car that has plenty of safety features like airbags, four cylinder engines, anti lock brakes and electronic stability control. A four cylinder engine is needed so that the car does not have overwhelming amounts of power that the driver cannot handle. Many websites recommend shying away from older cars because they may not be well suited with all the new safety features that are best for new drivers.
Websites including the wall street journal, carsguide.come, the Chicago sun times and autos.yahoo.com, all recommended the same cars almost to the tee. Safe cars for teenagers to drive would be the:
Honda Accord
Toyota Camry
Ford Focus
Hyundai Sonata
Volkswagon Jetta
So a new driver might not get the classic old car that they dreamed of or the ridiculously fast car that will leave everyone in their dust, but their parents can have peace at mind knowing that their child may beat the statistic that two thirds of teen passenger deaths are in vehicles driven by other teenagers.
