Blood, violence, love, jealousy, fear are all some of the characteristics featured in the Hunger Games and which are portrayed perfectly in the movie released Marched 23rd. On its opening weekend The Hunger Games earned $155 million in the box office. According to the Nydailynews.com, this non-sequel movie was the history grossing of its kind and the third highest in history, shortly behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight.

In an effort to save her sister from the fight to the death combat that every district must enter in their country of Panem, Katniss Everdeen and Peete Mellark from District 12 enter the Hunger Games to go against 24 other kids where only one victor can remain. The portrayal of Katniss Everdeen by Jennifer Lawerence was as so many fans had pictured she would be, not only with her appearance but also her loving but bitter characteristics. Katniss is very loving towards her family and would do anything for their safety, but she stayed away from getting too close with anyone outside her family relations. Family is her main priority and keeping Prim safe.

Peeta Mellark played by Josh Hutcherson is another story. I pictured him in the book to be huge, bulky and ridiculously strong, (kind of how Gale appears in the movie) but he did not meet up to my expectations. Hutcherson is smaller than and not as prominent as the Peeta that I read about. However, he did play the love sick pretty boy fairly well.

Other then Peeta, I thought that all the characters in movie were portrayed so well. Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Lenny Kravitz as Cinna and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy did such a good job at showing their distinct characters but at the same time showing their special bond with Katniss.

There are two sequels to The Hunger Games including Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Catching Fire is not scheduled to release until November of next year. But until then I’m sure the Hunger Games, movie and book, will keep the fans satisfied.
