Girls Soccer

The girl’s soccer team has begun the 05-06 season with a 5-1 record. With wins over South Dade (2-1), Miami Springs (1-2 currently the #2 team), Homestead (7-0), Killian (4-1), Coral Reef (0-0), and Southridge (2-1) they currently hold the 2nd place position in the county.

With Coral Reef being their only tie, Coach Torre said, “They could’ve played better but obtained better control in the 2nd half but the team is still trying to gel together.”

The Vipers mainly concentrated on the Palmetto Panthers which is currently our top rival in the Miami-Dade district. Unfortunately they lost 2-1 in the last seven minutes of the game bumping the girls down to 2nd place.

This year, the girls soccer team is challenged by the toughest district in the county. But with a strong team and eight returning seniors, it gives the team the top edge in experience.

Those seniors are Laura Avenas, Natalia Arita, Michelle Casaderall (who plays forward and made the 04-05 team 2 All Dade), Adriana Capero (which currently moved from JV to Varsity this year), Britney Hernandez, Gabriella Largaespceda (who is team captain and plays midfield), Georgina Patrizio, and Elizabeth Pinto(playing defense). Some freshmen to watch for are Gianelli Vagnitti, and Kimberly Segovia.

With a good jump into the season the Lady Vipers have a good shot at being a top contender in Districts, Regionals, and States.

“This is our year but next year it will be a rebuilding year so we have to take advantage,” said Coach Torre. The Lady Vipers are now in a battle because Palmetto and Coral Reef are right by their side.

Boys Soccer

The boy’s soccer team is lead by Coach Asorey who is a new member to the Viper’s athletic department. He coached at Gulliver Prep for two years and has high hopes for the Vipers this season.

“We have a strong chance to make it far this year,” he said. Last year the Vipers won districts but couldn’t make it farther than that.

The boys soccer team is currently ranked 1st in the county from the pre-season polls and hold a record of two wins and two ties. The wins are over South Dade (9-1) and Homestead (2-1), while their ties are to Coral Reef (1-1), and to Palmetto (2-2). A rival in this district they focused on was beating Killian which they played on Nov 30th upsetting them (4-1).

With a little weight off their shoulders they now focus on a big tournament called the Torino Cup which is held at the Kendall Soccer Park in which the best teams from Dade and Broward all participate.

The team has nine returning seniors and their captains are Jonathan Romero and Allen Sanchez. The team’s strength is in the advantage of having a starting and back up team, which gives them a lot of depth; yet their disadvantage is that the team is more or less young, currently starting five sophomores out of eleven players on the field.
