The Gay Straight Alliance club along with Amnesty International at Laramie High School is preparing for a couple events coming up this spring. One of these events they are considering is the Day of Silence, which takes place around the country on April 25. It is a silent and peaceful form of protest, and brings attention to the harassment of lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender students in public places such as school.
Club sponsors Elizabeth Becker, LHS history teacher, and Nicole Elder, LHS English teacher, plan to make a more comfortable environment for those who feel discriminated by others based on sexual orientation. “The club is a great way to achieve and spread knowledge of acceptance of people’s sexual orientation. GSA is a safe and accepting environment, and a place where no one should feel uncomfortable and where everyone is welcome,” says senior and second year club member Gina Gomez.
Laramie High School students and staff are invited to come join GSA Fridays at lunch in Rm. 110. For more information on Day of Silence, please visit www.dayofsilence.org.
