Student council, headed by seniors Matt Considine and Collin Cousineau, is taking on the daunting task of rallying Hoban spirit, and thus far is succeeding.

Pep rallies are the most obvious example of how student council has improved spirit. In recent years the rallies became routine, losing much of their vigor. This year the council officers have dedicated themselves to improving the rallies. By combining established traditions and adding innovations like a team-captain relay race, the pep rallies have reinvigorated school spirit.

To get student opinions for Spirit Week, the council conducted a survey. They listened to what the student body wanted, and added Patriotic Day, Cartoon Day and Crazy Hair Day to go with Pajama Day and Mum Day.

The officers' commitment to the student body was obvious when they posted paper swords on senior lockers. While many took what seemed a simple gesture for granted, they did not consider the time it required. Student council had to copy, cut and tape over 100 swords, besides looking up which lockers belonged to seniors.

The council is also experimenting with new ideas. Recently they raised money with a faculty car wash, which, according to senior president Jim Edminister, was a success. Also new this year pictures of senior football players and now soccer players hung on the stairway opposite the central office. Over the year, student council hopes to make posters for other teams.

The desire to participate in the council is becoming contagious. Twenty-two freshmen joined in the election for freshman class officers.

If student council continues to improve school spirit with its creativity, the student body can look forward to an exciting school year.
