Recently senior Michael Downey received recognition as the January’s Portage County Teen of the Month. The Portage County Teen Board, a group of students from across the county, bestowed this honor upon him. The Board tallied votes to determine which of the nominees was the most deserving.
Standing with his usual “Far Side” sweatshirt and his unkempt wavy red hair, Michael took some time to answer a few questions for The Colonel. It was nearly impossible to find Michael considering that he does not even have a lunch due to his full-course load, which includes four Advanced Placement classes. Other than his rigorous academic schedule Michael keeps busy as President of the National Honor Society, acting in the Winter One-Acts, and playing tennis.
AC: What is your favorite color?
MD: Green . . . Yeah. Green. Definitely.
AC: Who is your favorite band?
MD: CCR.
AC: And that stands for?
MD: Credence Clearwater Revival.
AC: And what kind of music do they play?
MD: Oh come on, Anya. Classic Rock. You don’t know CCR? I am going to tape you to the cd player and make you listen to them.
AC: Well, that’s interesting. What is your favorite book?
MD: Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis. It’s a religious book about a queen and her case against God.
After high school Downey plans to go to college, “Hopefully Princeton, but we’ll see,” he said. “I’ll probably be majoring in math to start . . . yeah- probably math.”
Michael’s words of advice to the students of Roosevelt: “Getting started is the hardest thing. Like homework and stuff- once you get started, the rest is easy.”
Congratulations Michael, and thank you for your contributions to Roosevelt High.
