Five of Sierra Vista High School Best Buddies students were hand-picked to go to Joy Prom. The students who attended were sophomore Zach Painter, senior Reggie Olipares, junior Markus Guston, senior Jessie Hamilton and sophomore Breanna Stansburg.
“It was great, I liked dancing all night, I had a really good time,” said Painter.
Joy Prom was a prom for teens and adults with “cognitive and physical impairments,” according to Joy Prom’s website.
“We took a lot of pictures which I really liked,” said Hamilton.
Everything was free for the teens and adults that attended. They had free make up and tiaras for the girls, and free shoe shining and top hats for the boys. They also supplied boutonnieres and corsages.
“It was really good. I had so much fun,” said Olipares.
The parents of the teens had their own room to sit back, relax and get free chair massages.
98.5 KLUC was there with Chet Buchanan from the Morning Zoo to host the event. He brought a DJ along with him to keep the music playing throughout the night.
“I really liked getting my makeup done,” said Stansburg.
Entertainment of the night included a juggler and a singer song writer.
“I had a good time,” said Gaston.
Everyone dressed in dresses and suits.
The Floor was packed with people dancing and having a great time. Pictures were taken music was played and everyone danced the night away.
“This year’s Joy Prom was amazing, and the experience brought tears to my eyes and permanent smile to my face for the night. The kids had a great time,” said Special Education teacher Ginger Jones.
Free food was also given to the teens, adults and the parents who attended catered by Hash House A Go Go, Canes Chicken Fingers and others.
Joy Prom was held at the M resort on May 12 from 6p.m. to 10p.m. Three hundred guests were invited and referred by local organizations. Over a thousand people showed up to the dance. Joy Prom wouldn’t have been possible without the generous donations from the Las Vegas community.
