I’m going into my junior year and my parents are pressuring me into getting a summer job. I continue to tell them that my schedule is too busy, but they just don’t seem to understand. I am already taking drivers ed for two weeks and I have multiple field hockey camps throughout the summer. Plus, I have no idea what kind of job I could even apply for. How can I work something out with my parents before summer hits?
Sincerely,
Schedule Overload
Dear Schedule Overload,
Try to tackle this problem before it becomes a significant issue between you and your parents. The first step to take would be to line up all of your already planned activities on a calendar for roughly the next four months. When you look at your calendar, it will give you a much better perspective on how much time you actually do have over the summer. Then decide for yourself whether or not you can handle the responsibility of a job. If you are as busy as you think, maybe it would be a good idea to hold off this summer. But if you really think about it, when you start driving your parents will expect you to be able to pay for gas and other various things as you get older. So maybe getting a job and saving up wouldn’t be a bad idea. Once you make your decision, be sure to sit down with your parents. Ask them if you can have a serious conversation and then discuss with them why you made the decision you did. If you are having trouble finding a place to work, try the local places. Snowball stands and ice cream shops always hire more people for over the summer.
