Words can’t really describe how amazing Kick-Ass is. It is honestly one of the best superhero films I’ve ever seen. The film managed to stay faithful to the comic while taking certain liberties that help make the movie better than its source material.

The film tells the story of Dave Lizewski, a teenage boy with a love for comic books. He feels invisible at school and spends most of his free time hanging out at a comic book store with his friends, Cody and Marty. Dave ponders early on in the film why no one has ever tried to be a superhero. This eventually leads Dave to buy a green wetsuit, along with a mask and two batons, and dubs himself Kick-Ass.

Dave’s first attempt at delivering vigilante justice to some petty thugs ends with him getting stabbed and ran over. The incident leaves Dave with damaged nerve endings and metal plating throughout his body. After his stay in the hospital, Dave decides to go back to crime-fighting. He manages to stop a man from being brutally beaten and footage of his heroic deed leaks on to YouTube, making him a sensation. The father-daughter duo of Damon and Mindy Macready also have a knack for costumed vigilance and they take on the roles of Big Daddy and Hit-Girl respectively.

The plot of the film is absolutely phenomenal. It manages to be emotionally engaging, visually thrilling, consistently funny and genuinely surprising. It balances its darker and more intense aspects with a great sense of humor. It has a visual flair that adds to the overall uniqueness of the movie. Kick-Ass works on so many different levels that it has—in my opinion—earned the title of Best Superhero Film Ever.

British actor Aaron Johnson does an excellent job in the title role. Chloe Grace Moretz is great as Hit-Girl, frequently switching from a foul-mouthed, hard-boiled killer to a naive 12-year-old. Nicholas Cage’s performance as Damon Macready/Big Daddy is a joy to watch. His campy portrayal of a superhero is funny and reminiscent of Adam West’s original Batman.

Quite frankly, even you don’t like superhero movies, watch this film. It’s so different from anything else to be released into the genre that it’s a must-see experience. Kick-Ass more than lives up to its title.
