My Amazing Mulan Experience

It was a great run. The show was compelling and fun to perform. Theater production became more than just a show for me. It became a home. The cast became family and all of them were positively uplifting. It’s hard to believe I’m graduating this year and that this was my final production show.

This year was my first time in production, but I have been in Theater class for three years. I have enjoyed every last bit of it.  It is not my last play. We still have our senior play to put together and perform.

Our show this year was Disney’s Mulan.  It was my first year to actually perform in theater production. Due to schedule complications, I couldn’t perform in last year’s production of Annie.  I won two roles in Annie, Mr. Bundles and Bert Healy. I went to every single Annie production last year and longed to be on the stage performing with the rest of the cast.

This year, I auditioned and won four roles in Mulan. I got to be the father, the emperor, one of the Hun’s soldiers, and one of the ensemble soldiers for the Chinese army. It was exhilarating playing several roles because it kept me busy the whole show. The hardest part of acting in Mulan was switching all the different costumes for the different roles. Everyone was great and helped me switch from one character to another. The most difficult costume change was the switch from the Hun soldier, Magyar, to the emperor. The emperor’s costume had many layers of clothes and I had to apply facial hair and wear a wig.

We call all our theater students family. Every night before a show we all hold hands and sing “May the Circle Be Unbroken” and it shows all of us that we are always welcome into the circle and we will always support one another.

It’s a great experience to have known all these people. It brought me close to kids I would have never talked to.I had a great time in theatre and enjoyed every second of it. It was definitely worth all the time spent to put on a compelling show. If I could, I would do it all over again.

I thank Mrs. Houghton for everything she has done for me and everyone else who helped me discover the “real” me.  It is an experience I shall never forget.

What a great article. I am so glad you got to play with us this year. Senior play will be so much fun. May the circle be unbroken. Mrs. H
