Do you remember back in your younger days? You might have spent a night at the movies with your best friends or at the "spot" where you all hung out. Well, for todays youth that "spot" is Sharkey's Skate Center. Every Friday and Saturday kids of all ages go there and hang out with there friends, do a little skating, play some pool, and play the various games through out the night. But Thursday, April 16, the rink was open to only Cameron Middle Schoolers for the monthly skate night. The month's theme was 'Hawaiian,' and there were some interesting outfits that night. There were also special drawings for extra credit or free homework, and to top it all off there was a hula-hoop off between various students.

There was a student hula-hoop competition that was separated into three separate rounds. The first round they declared three people to move on to final round because it seemed as if no one was ever going to fail. In the second round, there was only one person who moved on to the finals. Before the final round started, the teachers got together and decided that if the students didnt fall they would add an extra hula-hoop until only one hula-hooper remained.

After several intense minutes of hula-hooping Kaitlyn Ferrara came out on top and was crowned the CMS hula-hooping queen and was rewarded with a crisp $5 bill and a king sized Kit Kat bar. Kaitlyn said that there is "no real secret to my hula-hooping skills," she just did it. Kaitlyn has been hula-hooping for about two years now and it just came naturally to her. But when it came down to wire she said there was no pressure on her to win; she just had fun and was really confident.

But the most anticipated event had to have been the hula-hoop off between Mr. Roper and Mr. Albright. HE IS THE CHAMPION OF THE HULA-HOOPERS! Drumroll please...Mr. Albright beat Mr. Roper hands down and now has the bragging rights for the year until they compete again. But on the educational side, Mr. Albright said, "The skate night has a double plus to it. It allows the students to see teachers out side of a school setting and see that we are human top. Also half of the admissions that are paid at the door are given to the middle school and used for field trips." At the door all students who enter have to pay $4. Mr. Albright said that the CMS skate night happens once a month, though they are not sure about a May skate night.
