In my
opinion, the most crippling factor of American culture is isolationism. While
kids in other nations are expected to learn at least two languages, American
children, because of their isolated geographical position, groan at the thought
of learning a second language. Isolationism in America leads to citizens who
are blind to cultural differences, making America, despite its diverse
background, very discouraging of anything but “American culture.” We can see cultural isolationism choking
America’s educational system and tolerance of diversity.
In my 8th
grade Social Studies room there was a poster that had the USA on a completely
black surface; in white words, it stated at the bottom, “America, you are not
alone.” Students and adults alike avoid
watching the news--even the local news. Lacking knowledge of current and
historical events, we find Americans today struggling to understand other cultures;
therefore, they make huge gaffes in foreign nations. This is why American
tourists are frequently made fun of in other countries, since we are so
ignorant of other cultures.
Without a basic knowledge of other
countries, America is simply committing suicide, for she is slowly choking
herself off from the rest of humanity. The country that states that it is open-minded,
tolerant, dominant, and superior educationally is anything but. To resolve this
problem, Americans need to actually be open-minded to other perspectives,
tolerant of different opinions, and well educated in history and current
events. America, having been blessed with such a diversity of cultures, needs
to embrace the profusion of beauty pouring out from her.
