About this edition
The
National Edition is a weekly collection of stories
from around the nation.
They
were written by young journalists using ASNE's publishing tool to
post their school newspapers online.
We choose stories based on their quality and appeal to a broad teen readership.
These selections represent stories that were the most interesting or moving of the week.
This is not a "10 best stories" list.
And while we understand that the writers, photographers and editors are
not professional journalists, we're looking for work that adheres to sound
journalistic practices.
Stories are picked in the following general categories:
news, features, entertainment, student life and opinions.
Generally, we don't post sports stories unless they have a
strong news peg or are features that are of interest to readers beyond the
local readership.
If you would like to know more about the National Edition, please check out
our FAQ.
A team of people with experience in journalism, education
and/or online projects reviews all the material that has been posted in the
last week.
General criteria include:
Quality
of journalism
Number
of sources
Authority
of sources
Diversity
of sources
Writing
style
Grammar
Punctuation
Accuracy,
fairness, balance and a lack of conflict of interest (as best as we can
determine)
Does
the overall story approach reflect sound journalistic practices that
others can learn from?
Interest
to the overall readership, especially teens
Is
the topic newsworthy?
Is
it something readers might be interested in or can relate to?
Originality
Was
any part of the story copied from a magazine, Web site or another teen
publication without proper attribution? If we suspect plagiarism, the
story will not be chosen.
The
story has a unique angle or fresh approach, even when the topic itself is
typical, such as homecoming, the prom or graduation.
How do I do I get my stories listed on the national
edition?
Publish online regularly, and we will see your stories more
often. Every story and photo is reviewed every week.
My current story about x was better than the one you
posted a few weeks ago.
Only material that is published during the current period is
evaluated for the national edition. If your story was published during an
especially competitive week when many schools updated their online editions, it
might not make it.
Our team won a state championship and you didn’t choose
our story. This is the biggest thing to happen at the school in years.
Since our audience is national, we sometimes will pass over
stories that are a big deal locally. While they’re important, they do not have
broad appeal. Sports stories typically fall into this area.
How do I contact the people in charge of the national
edition?
Click here to send us an e-mail! While you should feel free
to suggest that your story be selected, know that we’ll see it anyway and you
don’t have to lobby for it!
