- Winners: The Southfield Jay newspaper took home numerous awards, including its eighth consecutive Spartan Award, at the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) awards ceremony on April 20, in Lansing. A Spartan is the highest honor given by MIPA for journalistic excellence. Eleven staffers also won individual awards, including senior Tiara Hill, staff artist, who took first place in the comic strip category. (Hill is front and center, shortest one.) In a separate competition, four senior staffers also received honors in the 2008 Detroit Free Press Writing Awards contest. Justin Johnson was honored for editorial writing; Ramona Fisher and Personna Hover took honors in sports writing, and Rae Larkins, for features writing.
