Field project moves into phase IIITuesday, June 13, 2006 By Atsushi Hisaka
Construction for new bathrooms and a concession stand will begin later this month as Phase III of the field project comes to life. A single building will replace the concession stand and separate bathrooms under the bleachers that have been in use since the school opened in 1952. The new “Field House,” as it will be called, will be built between the southeast corner of the field and the bleachers. The building will be made from gray concrete bricks with wood framing and occupy 1,726 square feet. “It’s embarrassing,” athletic director Jeff Peeler said of the existing facilities. “No spectator or athlete would want to use those facilities. The advancement of our Field House will be something we can be proud of.” Phase III has been estimated to cost over $400,000 and is scheduled for completion before the football season starts in September. The concession stand will include stainless steel counters and sinks, according to George Osgood, project chairman. “We would also like to add a stove and barbecue pit,” he said. Funding for the entire field project, which includes a soccer/football field and a NCAA-standard track, has come from private donors, companies, and foundations. “These projects take lots of donations and thousands of hours of hard work,” Osgood said. “Student efforts such as Run for the Bathrooms, which took place last year, raised over $1,500, but we are still in need of more donations, because, since the plan was proposed, the price of the materials has risen.” |
