Boro Wrestling Team has sights on State Title

Thursday, February 24, 2011 By John Kramer

Another successful season for ‘Boro wrestling has come and is almost gone. Coach Ryan Root has done a great job preparing the team for the State tournament. Star Senior, Cody Shivener was Wrestler of the Year this year for his 145 lbs. weight class and has his sights aimed high for the immediate and not so immediate future. Cody is the clear favorite to win this year at state. Being named the clear number one though comes with consequences. “Being the number one at state is tough. You have an ‘X’ on your back, and everyone wants to take you down.” said Cody Shivener. Shivener, who has received countless scholarship offers from Division 1 Wrestling schools, is not sure yet what he will do, where he will go, or if he will wrestle in college next winter. “It’s a strenuous sport.” said Shivener. “Everyone wants me to make the right decision and I just don’t know what that is yet.” It seems as though the University of Maryland is the front runner for Cody as of now. The wrestling team is deep this year, and has many other role players that have stepped up. “We lost a lot of great wrestlers last year, but it is great how a bunch of the younger guys have stepped up.” said Senior Ryan Jackson. Along with Jackson, Aaron Thoman, and Josh D’urso have potential to win at the state level and help catapult Springboro to a team state title. Brandon Walker from the Junior Class is also one that may step up and compete at a high level. "I have no prediction,” stated Coach Ryan Root, “but you better watch out, ‘cause here come the Panthers."
