When the Student Voice was wrapping up the issue, Chile was struck by an earth % 0that, according to the New York Times , was 1,000 times greater than the one experienced last month in Haiti . Chile's earth % 0struck on Feb. 27. It was an 8.8 magnitude earth % 0compared to Haiti's 7.0 quake. The devastating earth % 0has killed more then 700 individuals and the death count is still increasing. CNN.com reports that the earth % 0may have shifted Earth's axis and caused shorter days, according to scientists at NASA. Relief efforts are now being made for Chilean survivors who are in need of food and water. Senior Felipe Arredondo Almonacid, who has family in Chile, said that he was frightened when he heard of the earth % 0in Chile. "It makes me sad, but I wasn't too shocked because the country has had many earthquakes," said Arredondo . Arredondo said that his mom saw CNN early in the morning and that they tried to call family in Chile. "We couldn't get connected and [when we did] there was a three minute [time] limit," he said. Arredondo said that when he spoke to his family they said that they were fine. "The earth % 0didn't strike my family because they live in the fifth region and the earth % 0happened in the eighth region."
