Because of What I See Daily

$0Not too long ago, the McAllister Park Little League All-Stars made all of San Antonio proud as they fought valiantly toward winning the 2009 Little League World Series Championship in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Although our boys of summer fell just short of reaching their lofty goal by losing in the championship round, they, nevertheless, awoke a community. In what appeared short order, the boys had San Antonio recognizing and appreciating what youth can achieve – the far distances young people are willing to go in order to attain goals. Suddenly, our boys of summer, our McAllister Park Little League Champions, were lifted to new heights, a loftiness not typically reserved for young people.$0$0 Like many in San Antonio, I watched the McAllister Park boys lay it all on the line in Williamsport. Like so many, I cheered the boys on each step of the way, even in their defeat, for those of us who have tried and lost, realize that it is not always in triumph that the best is gained. Perhaps though, not like too many, I became somewhat concerned by the increasing notoriety and celebrity bestowed upon the boys. This is not to argue that they were and are not deserving of a River Parade, requests for private socials, and the public signing of autographs. They deserve this and more. It is, however, to say that I believe most every young person from the area deserves similar recognition, especially those young persons associated with MacArthur High School.$0$0 Certainly, we must give the boys from McAllister Park their every due. However, you will have to pack a lunch if you want to try and convince me that our classrooms here at MacArthur are not filled proportionately with the same character and tenacity the boys of summer demonstrated in Williamsport.$0$0 While I may be referred to as a, “first year teacher at MacArthur,” I am no stranger to the campus or the district. I am a 1979 graduate of Roosevelt High School. My three children are distinguished products of the district, a district I consider the best in the state. I take great pride in and appreciate what it requires of each student to go above and beyond in this district, on this campus. It is no easy task to attempt standing atop the mountain when all about you are those with significant achievement in mind and conviction of heart.$0$0 I will stand in line with the others to applaud what the McAllister Park boys achieved. Again, they earned the recognition. They hold a place in my heart. However, I will move directly to the front of the line to make the claim that there are similarly deserving students from MacArthur. While a couple of months on the campus certainly limits me on many issues and opinions…not this time. Beyond the stellar character of the students who fill my classroom daily, to those students I see striving for so much in and out of their respective locations on and off the campus, I know this: so many of you deserve a River Parade, recognition at social events, and the opportunity to have an audience. I believe this wholeheartedly because I witness it daily. $0$0 $0 $0
