Juniors answered some questions correctly, such as which current teacher also is an instructor at UCSD ( Ms. Sandra Foster-King ) and the name of the first principal at San Diego SCPA (Florence Johnson). Seniors got many answers right, to questions like what was the name of the first site where SCPA was located and who directed the show Tales of Polynesia ? (The first answer was Roosevelt and the second was Mr. Truba .) Out of fourteen questions, the seniors won five to four, with five questions left unanswered. With Ms. Julia Roberts as the activity sponsor, four seniors and four juniors set themselves up into groups with senior Beatrice Martino and junior Sarah Roy as their separate team captains, respectively. Each team was given a set of numbered cards to write their answers on after answering the projected problem. A stool was set in between both teams; the team to answer the presented problem with the quickness placed their card in a single pile on the stool, before the other team. As each problem became solved, a new problem was revealed. Six points were awarded for correctness and quickness, while five points were awarded for simple correctness. The seniors finished three problems ahead of the juniors, giving Martino enough time to drink her chocolate milk. The score was initially a close call, but the seniors prevailed with a whopping 59 points over the juniors’ 48 points , earning the class of 2010 another victory for the day. MUSICAL CHAIRS Five seniors and five juniors battled it out in a classical game of Musical Chairs on Monday, November 15. The competition took place in the Circle of the Sun with Mrs. Mitzi Lizarraga as the judge. Around and around the senior and juniors walked hesitantly around the circle to the music that was being played. The first to be out was a junior. As the music continued and the the class of 2010 and 2011 walked around the chairs frantically one by one the juniors began to drop like flies out of the game. In the last round, the game began with one senior and one junior remaining, which left the audience wondering who was going to take the win? Senior Charlene Hinton and junior Kevin Belisario battled it out for the win, until the music was stopped and it was Belisario who took the win for the juniors! Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 BLIND FOLDED DRAWING Gathered in Ms. Nancy Katz’s , the first round began after an unsuccessful wait 20-minute wait for at least one other junior to accompany class of 2011’s only competitor Tashia Williams . The competition is supposedly held between a team of three from each class, broken down into competing pairs to be blindfolded, and then given a maximum of five minutes to draw their respective subjects, given by Ms. Katz. Some of the seniors present felt this match would surely lead to a forfeit with the lack of adequate junior representatives, and yet another year of senior Kelsey Evans-Lang , producing yet another strikingly accurate drawing this year, but the circumstances changed with a sudden influx the missing two competitors and a crowd of surveyors, all within the last ten minutes of lunch. Seniors won two out of the three subjects: a family of four skeletons and four people eating at table, while juniors wereonly able to pull out one win, a bird’s view over San Diego, so the point went to the Class of 10 ! With carving knives in hand, the juniors and seniors were challenged to whittle their soap into "a city building," "a sleeping animal," and "a healthy fruit with a bite taken out." Each participant was given a bar of soap, several sculpting tools, and ten minutes to carve their assigned figure. Both the class of 2010 and the class of 2011 gathered to watch, and participants were enthusiastically cheered on by their respective classes. By the time Ms. Katz began to judge the completed soap sculptures, the fresh scent of suds filled the air. The juniors had the best fruit sculpture (of a half-eaten pear), but the seniors had both the best city building (created by Reshil Torrevillas ) and the best sleeping animal (a turtle, sculpted by Becca Foster ). While the victory in the Soap Sculpting competition was a sudsy success for the seniors, it was the only point that the class of 2010 scored on Tuesday. NAME THAT TEACHER It was a close shot in the Name That Teacher competition in the music and dance quad, run by Ms. Christi Berg and Ms. Michelle Cash. Four seniors and four juniors were shown digital pictures and were to write down who they believed the picture was of out of a lettered selection of staff members. In the end, it came out to be a tie, and a tiebreaker question served as a last resort.Students were asked to name three new teachers. Seniors finished first, but only named two out of three new teachers, while juniors were able to name three new teachers and won the competition. MUSIC OFF The rivaling classes of ’10 and ’11 challenged their creative capabilities through the expression of music with Ms. Tamara Paige as the head sponsor of the activity. With five seniors and four juniors participating on each opposing team, scores were decided upon audience appeal, group participation, andcreative expression by judges Paige, Mr. Matt Quiroz and Mr. Mark Stevens . Team captains Gabriel Jasmin for the seniors and Chaz Cabrera for the juniors were asked to draw two verbs, two nouns, and two adjectives out of three respective hats; the chosen wordswere to be utilized during their three minute performance. Jasmin drew out “fighting,” “yelling,” “goat,” “disco stick,” “teal,” and “mustard” for theseniors, while Cabrera drew out “sleeping,” “crawling,” “maracas,” “space,”“freak,” and “red.” After six minutes of preparation, a coin was flipped andthe seniors performed first with a spinoff of Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.” The juniors, on the other hand, performed a tune reminiscent of the verb “sleeping,” while team captain Cabrera performed a solo featuring some crawling, “freak” movements, and, amidst some improvisation, speaking aloud the word “red” for our comical relief. The decision was unanimous: a point for the juniors. RELAY RACE Juniors got hyped up while the seniors stretched and waited for the race to begin. The players had to spin around a baseball bat and then hola-hoop and then run around the Circle of the Sun. Seniors got off to a rough start, but the juniors had this one in the bag. Junior De'vaughn Kelly sped through the obstacles so fast leaving the seniors in the dust. Senior Hannah Aarons-Banes tried her hardest to get the seniors caught up with the juniors. However, the juniors already had it made up in their mind that they wanted this win and they did triumph . TUESDAY SCORE RECAP Juniors 2011 : 4 points Seniors 2010 : 4 points WEDNESDAY PIE EATING CONTEST On Tuesday, November 18, the juniors and seniors battled it out in front of the student store for the messiest event, the Pie Eating Contest. Six juniors and six seniors were brave enough to participate in the event that included Chocolate Mousse and Lemon Meringue Pies. The rules were quite simple: participants had five minutes to scarf down as much of the pie as they could with only their mouths. As soon as time started, everyone threw their faces into the pies, determined to finish it all. After five minutes of cream covered faces and priceless expressions, Mr. Mike Wager examined each pie and determined who ate the pie successfully. With a score of four pies to two, the seniors received the point, along with gaining the title of Best Pie Eaters. SING OFF If you had to pick on which event to watch on Wednesday, the Sing Off was the place to be. The juniors and the seniors brought out their best singers to compete for the win. This event was held in Mr. R.C. Haus ' room, where eight juniors and eight seniors would compete to be the sweetest sounding class. All participants had exactly 30 seconds to sing. Judges were our principal Mrs. Mitzi Lizarraga and Mr. Haus, while senior advisor Mrs. Erin Fetters kept time. Seniors gave it a good go but in the end, juniors Sarah Roy and Montay Romero brought it home for the juniors, giving them the final point for the whole event. Initially, juniors didn’t even show up with an exception of junior Zack Myles , who then ran and grabbed three others. Students were required to pull a strip of paper and act out the celebrity written on it. Juniors were stumped and unfamiliar with two of the celebrities they pulled from the envelope, including Cher, so the seniors won three to one, with excellent impressions of Michael Jackson (by Matthew Dray ), Lady Gaga (by Claressa Slaughter ), and Madonna (by Hayley Sherwood) . WEDNESDAY SCORE RECAP Juniors 2011 : 5 Seniors 2010 : 7 THURSDAY THREE-LEGGED RACE The teams for the three-legged race were two seniors against two juniors. They lined up on one side of the Circle of the Sun and the race track was the cement circle. As soon as the two classes were signaled to start, they shot off in fast pace, joined by the legs. At first the juniors looked like they were in the lead, but a tragic fall cost them their position ahead. After the set back the junior pair quickly recollected themselves and stumbled across the finish line, and tagged their next pair of classmates--but it was already too late. By this time the seniors were already ahead by about two pairs. Still, the juniors never gave up and the seniors gave it all their might as well. In the end the juniors never had a chance to let their last pair have a go around the circle. The seniors had finished by then. Without doubt, the seniors dominated the three-legged race. WATER BALLOON TOSS Rows of juniors and seniors with eager hands filled the Circle of the Sun for Thursday's Water Balloon Toss under the watchful eyes of Ms. Susan Strasser and Mr. Tymothy Farson . Partners would toss water balloons back and forth, taking one step backward after each round, until they dropped the water balloon and were disqualified. Seniors pairs were the first to go, as water balloons cascaded from their clumsy hands. Soon, only one senior pair was left while many of the junior pairs were still standing. In the last round, Senior Bianca Paraiso --part of the last Class of '10 pair standing--fatefully tossed the balloon to her partner, where it slipped out of her hands and exploded on the ground. The juniors were declared the winner, earning them their only point for the day. INDIVIDUAL DANCE OFF Seniors and juniors buzzed with anticipation at Thursday's Mini Dance Off, hosted in Mrs. Erin O'Connor Fetters ' room at lunch. Representing the class of 2011 were Taeok Lee , Marco Bonnes , Denise Barroga , Nicole Escobar , Kimberly Garner , and Kevin Balisario ; reprsenting the class of 2010 were Marina Rasmussen , Lindsay Fulton , Casey Akers , Karina Pinkerton , Hannah Stiles , and Amey Leach . Their individual performances were to be judged according to three criteria: creativity/choreography, skill and athletics, and aesthetics. A hush fell over the crowd as Mrs. Fetters announced the first style of dance to be presented; ballet. Nicole Escobar and Marina Rasmussen demonstrated their outstanding skills in ballet in two very beautiful solos. Next, Marco Bonnes and Casey Akers performed their modern choreographies. Both danced exquisitely, but very differently. Bonnes' choreography exhibited much intensity and power, whereas Akers' choreography was heart-wrenchingly poetic and graceful. Next Denise Barroga and Lindsay Fulton battled it out with their jazz dances. These two very energetic and fiery dancers performed with the characteristic brilliance for which they are known. This was followed by tap. Taeok Lee danced with great spirit and energy as his classmates cheered him on. Karina Pinkerton chose to dance a cappella, with only chants and exclamations to add flourish to the sounds produced by her feet. Both representatives demonstrated a great command of rhythm. These exciting rhythmic dances were followed by very supple and gorgeous Tahitian dances, performed by Kimberly Garner and Hannah Stiles. Their hips moved back and forth with great speed and agility as their glowing smiles warmed the room. The last styles of dance were unique to each class. The juniors displayed exceptional skill in hip hop through their representative Kevin Balisario, whereas the seniors demonstrated a style of dance that is not often represented: Irish. Amey Leach rhythmically commanded her space and exhibited great eloquence in her art. The dancers successfully awed not only the judges, but also their fellow classmates. When the Mini Dance Off finished, the energy in the room was palpable. After much suspense and anticipation, the score was revealed: 178.5 points for the juniors, and 182 points for the seniors. Another win for the class of 2010!
