The Spikers start off a new season with many difficult changes – a new head coach, new teammates, and more responsibility.

The boys’ Varsity volleyball team suffered a setback when it lost Head Coach Kerri Eich, but the Spikers bounced back when Alyson Randick filled the position. They have similar coaching practices, but the change is hard for returning players.

“Coach Eich was more like a mom who gently cared for us while physically pushing us,” said Captain Joseph Chang. “ Coach Randick is more like the encouraging father figure who pushes us as far as possible.”

Returning players know that the team cannot afford to be arrogant, like several squad members were last year. The veterans look forward working with and training the rookies this year.

“Given the fact that we had very little practice time on the court, I believe that we will become better as the days go by,” said senior Jason Lee.

The players do not let their scoring performances interfere with their team chemistry. The Spikers know that they maximize their court time by figuring out their strengths and weaknesses.

“Maybe getting our butts kicked is our wake-up call,” said Lee.

A loss at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday will not prevent the team from achieving greatness this season. Despite a low standing, the Wildcats used the tournament to build chemistry.

The Spikers are enduring a tough preseason in order to prepare for teams like Palisades, Venice, and Westchester.

The squad lost to Santa Monica yesterday in three straight sets, and it plays Tuesday against Carson at 2:30 p.m.
