“Even though we lost 7-0 (to Westchester), it was still our best match,” said Tennis Coach Jordan Saxon. “We had an amazing performance.”

After losing several experienced seniors last year, Saxon is eager to train the basically brand-new team.

According to Saxon, Westchester was a highly skilled team, and despite our players’ efforts, their game was unmatchable to our novice level.

“Many young players have a lot of potential,” said junior Kimberly Willow. “I’m hoping to play as well as we can this year.”

In addition to Willow’s goals, Saxon also wishes to not only achieve valuable experience for the incoming ninth graders but also to give an enjoyable last year for the seniors.

The loss to Westchester has partially affected the Netwomen, who also lost to Venice (7-0) two days later. Fortunately, the Wildcats are not losing their ambition or poise.

“We are very prepared for this season,” said Saxon. “I am aware of our capabilities, and I know we can do well this year.”

The team has not yet faced Palisades High School, which boasts one of the highest-ranked tennis teams in the Western League.

Senior Tri-Captains Stella Kim, Jennifer Lee, and Diana Whang have been involved with the tennis team since their freshman year and believe that their dedication, as well as strong leadership, will encourage some of the younger players to work harder and continue to improve.

“We focus a lot on basics, serves, and forehands,” said Kim. “And we really focus on strengthening all aspects of our teamwork and technique.”

“We practice every school day, except for shortened days,” added Willow.

Saxon also hopes that some of their improved players from last year, juniors Angela Whang and Sissi Chen, will also lead the team to victory from their current 2-3 overall standing.
