Bright lights, elegant dresses, and rambunctious music captivated over 540 students who attended the Homecoming Dance at Omni Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Many guests arrived in limousines raising the enthusiasm and hype of Uni’s most celebrated annual school event.

The unfortunate loss of the Homecoming football game against Fairfax (6-7) earlier did not dampen the mood of the exciting night on Oct.28.

After the game, people headed to the salon or just a friend’s house to prepare for the upcoming night’s dance.

The Homecoming Dance officially began at 8 p.m. but didn’t hit full swing until an hour later. However, students began lining up at the door earlier than expected.

In light of the theme, “The Black and White Affair,” many arrived in the two colors; however, colors such as pink, green, and others bights were also evident.

Advantages for early birds were getting a good table in the ballroom, greeting their unrecognizable friends, and having their pictures taken by Lifetouch before their appearance was affected by the excessive dancing.

Soon after the dancing began, the food arrived. The hotel catered cuisine included chicken tenders, shrimp, vegetarian egg rolls, cheese quesadillas, and desserts—brownie, lemon, and cheesecake bites. Students filled up their plates, but not their stomachs, because dancing was the main focus of the entire night.

A disc jockey from 7Oasis played a variety of music, ranging from hip-hop to reggaeton, which bumped the floor for four hours. Students were surprised to hear three slow songs in the middle of the mix, instead of one as a last dance. In addition, a small group branched off to show off their break-dancing moves in the middle of the dance floor.

“The music was not the best part of the night, but I still enjoyed the continuous dancing vibe,” said senior Sabina Mamedova.

In the midst of the excitement, the winners of the Homecoming Court were also announced. Gideon Ben-Abu and Mikiko Yamamoto won King and Queen, Alex Cruz and Sonya Forghani won Prince and Princess, Josh Rezaee and Therese Rodriguez won Duke and Duchess, and Travis Anthony won Count; there were no nominees for Countess.

The dance brought many tired feet to a halt after the ending was announced a few minutes earlier than 12 a.m. Some exhausted students fled home, while others, accompanied by friends, drove to eat or continue the night at a local dance club.

“I had an amazing time at the dance, but I was sad to realize that this was my last Homecoming dance of high school,” said senior Jessica Torres.
