Game Design Club Launches First Gaming Tournament

Last year rowdy gamers crammed into room C162 in anticipation of the first video game tournament with hopes of raising money for the up and coming Game Design Club (GDC.)

One year later, the Game Design Club is still thriving, and this week they started their annual tournament.

Members of GDC have only two goals in mind, to have fun and to raise money.

Last year, a group of students decided to create the club because they wanted to recruit people who could help them design and produce their own video games.

The tournaments were started to help the club raise money to purchase more games. Another benefit is that the tournament gives the club members additional chances to test their skills as professional gamers.

Last year, the club featured two tournaments.

This year the club has been procrastinating and only recently started reviving the contests the first of the year.

This year’s contest featured Super Smash Bros. Melee, Guilty Gear Isuka, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, and Naruto Gekitou Ninja Teisen 3.

The tournament started on April 11, and it was scheduled to resume April 13, but due to unforeseen complications the tournament resumed April 14, and ends today.

“We started having these tournaments so we could fund our video game club,” said Uni alumni and part-founder of the GDC, Mark Greyson.

“Secondly, we started the trounaments so we could reward people for being good at something the school doesn’t even consider.”

“I’m a typical teenager,” said Club President Aaron Rodgers, senior.

“ I like video games, so I got people I know and people I don’t to make the whole experience worthwhile,” he added.

The tournaments have been taking place at lunch in room C162.

Many students entered the tournament to prove themselves to friends or just to challenge others to see if they are the best.

“ I joined the tournament with the rest of my friends to prove to them that I was good at Naruto,” said senior David Reisine.

Others joined just for fun knowing they could best anyone.

“I joined the tournament so my friends could try to beat me,” said senior Hijiri Tacheuchi.

The GDC isn’t stopping yet.

“Get ready for the next one,” said Rodgers enthusiastically. Rodgers gave no hint as to when the next tournament will begin.
