For the first time ever, the executive branch of the United States Government is making an attempt at reforming the defunct Social Security System. The need for change came to the surface when it was found that the current scheme design of the system was impossible to maintain as long as the status quo continued to persist.

When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt first created the system during his presidency, it was his intention that the system be funded by the year 1965.

But things hardly ever work out as perfectly as they do on paper. Here we are, more than four decades after the system was supposed to be funded, and still we have the same old problems the system started out with. Rather than use annuities to finance the system, the U.S. Government kept procrastinating until Bush’s proposed reforms involve a radical step away from the current setup of the system. His overhaul, if adopted would include placing at least partial control over what Social Security payments are spent on.

The issue that everyone up until now has been trying to avoid is that eventually, the money being paid into the program by younger citizens will not be enough to pay off the mounting number of seniors. What the Bush administration is trying to do is give private enterprise some control over Social Security simply because they, at least, are capable of paying their clients.

To sum it up, changes are being made that will allow the Social Security System to be funded legitimately, and the people will be given partial control over how their hard-earned dough is spent. The move is not a ploy to win over corporate support for Bush’s politics, but a move that is forty years overdue.
