At-a-glance

The Bush administration has been talking tough to Iran recently. The Bush administration is accusing Ayatollah Khomeini, the head of the Iranian government, of many human rights abuses and he is being verbally attacked by the US for continuing his nuclear program. While bringing reform to Iran and making them discontinue their weapons program is essential, once again Bush has his priorities mixed up.

The election results in Iraq have just come in, and the Iranian friendly Shiites have the majority. Iraq is now in danger of becoming a theocracy in Iran’s image. Bringing reform to Iran is important, but preventing Iraq from becoming just like Iran is more important. If the Iraqi government becomes similar to Iran’s, all of the money and American and Iraqi lives would have been in vain.

Talking tough to Iran gets nothing done. They know we do not have the men or the resources to invade. If Iraq turns into a theocracy, they will help Iran and theocracies around the Middle East will become more powerful. The best thing the Bush administration can do to hurt Iran right now is to make sure Iraq does not become a theocracy.

Administration officials have said that they do not want a war in Iran, yet the language they use towards Iran is similar to the language Bush used with Iraq before he invaded it. And with Iran snugly between Iraq and Afghanistan, it would be hard for a war hawk administration to pass this up.

This week North Korea has announced that their nuclear capabilities have increased, and do you know what Bush did? Nothing. He is continuing with the six country talks to disarm North Korea even though they asked for one on one meetings with the US. For some strange reason, Bush finds a country that will have a nuclear weapon soon much more dangerous than a country with many nuclear weapons.

Bush must turn his head away from Iran and focus it on one on one talks with North Korea to disarm them and make sure that Iraq does not become a theocracy.

Iran and Iraq are just a letter apart; Bush needs to see to it that their names is the only thing the two countries have in common.
