Everyone spoke too soon when criticizing the B/C schedules. B/C scheduling was a system implemented last year that allowed students to take AP classes for a full year while their other classes switched halfway, but it required students to arrive at 7:30 a.m. It was horrible for anyone who wanted sleep, but that system was replaced by the 6x2 schedule this year, which, frankly, is even worse. You might remember 6x2 scheduling from middle school: six classes a day for an entire year. It worked back then, but it is remarkably unbeneficial in a high school environment. School still ends at the same time, so our classes are considerably shorter than they were on last year’s system. With less class time to learn, teachers assign copious amounts of homework. And since there are more classes, there’s even more homework to do. High school students have many responsibilities on top of homework, be it attending to family, a job, college apps, or extra-curricular activities. On this schedule, the countless students who are on teams have to leave their last two periods and miss invaluable instruction time. On the 4x4, teams/sports were held during the last period of the day, so they wouldn’t miss any of their other classes. Not to mention, walking between six classes in a large campus with an abundance of stairs is very fatiguing. Attempting to retain six periods’ worth of knowledge is mentally fatiguing as well. Furthermore, it will be hard to recall any of the information delivered in the span of one hour. Maybe the 6x2 will save money, but is it really worth compromising the education of students in an already turbulent time?
