The idea of a welcome back to school article is to motivate students and kindle their spirits. But the University High Wildcat Staff are realists so we know an article exhorting students to work hard and try their best is the same as spending two hours on an articlethat no one will heed. Forget that; no one will even read it. While encouraging students’ highest aspirations may be a noble cause, students’ primary motivators should be themselves. So here we break tradition: it’s your job to get yourself going. We’re not your parents. We’re not your teachers. And we’re not your counselors. We’re you. Some of us slept until noon during the summer. Most of us wanted freedom yet wouldn’t accept the smallest of responsibilities like remembering to feed the dog or clean up after the cat, while others didn’t get or want a job despite our parents’ constant urging and our complaints of a lack of money. Some of us even ended up in summer school after moping through the academic year with a less than graceful performance in math and English.
We procrastinate, falter, and remind ourselves that this will be the year of change. And then we do it all over again. But not this year. We’ll buckle down, get in the routine of doing things on time, and finally change. Despite our best efforts, we’ve turned this editorial into an inspirational piece. Thankfully, it’s not terribly cliche. Remember, we’re realists. So, welcome everyone, from the overwhelmed freshmen to the neurotic seniors, back to miserable stairs and random filming blockades. Yeah, we’re already counting down the days until Winter Break too. Freshmen, enjoy your first and last year of fun. Sophomores, aren’t you glad you aren’t Freshmen? Juniors, welcome . . . to the end of your social life. And Seniors, it’s almost over. In the least cheesiest way, we wish you good luck.
