Crews from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) arrived on campus over Spring Break to probe the upper field, also known as the Brandon Tartikoff Field, for potential earthquake faults.

Officials expect crews to finish work on the upper field by the end of next week, although they may continue to collect samples in various areas throughout campus thereafter.

LAUSD Superintendent Roy Romer has ordered the inspection of the campus’s fields for earthquake faults to ascertain the safety and the structural integrity of the campus.

Construction workers are drilling down in ground to extract cores for analysis, carving a diagonal line from the southeast corner of the field to the northeast.

The core extraction has forced the soccer team, softball team, and general physical education classes off of the field. Moreover, Tuesday’s earthquake drill forced classes to congregate on the lower field and near the Music bungalows.

When core analysis on the upper field is complete, LAUSD crews may explore the area near the H bungalows, as well, for conditions that could indicate potential seismic activity.
