Welcome freshmen! You’ve survived the first few weeks of school and should give yourselves a pat on the back. I understand that many of you are a little frightened but have already adapted and love high school.

Either way, I’ve put together a list of “do’s” and “don’ts” for your freshman year. This list is full of advice for your first year in high school, things we (seniors and juniors) didn’t know but are nice enough to share with you.

So sit back, relax, and be prepared to be coached in the ways of high school!

Rule #1 - Do not make upperclassmen angry.

This rule is crucial. Last year, you ruled your middle school. But this year, you’re starting from the bottom, and believe me, there is no way to climb to the top before senior year. Don’t try to be cocky with seniors; they’re eighteen, they’re ready to get the heck out of here, and they don’t want to be bothered by freshmen.

Rule # 2 - Join a lot of clubs.

Not only does participation in school activities look amazing to colleges, it helps you get out of your bubble and make new friends. Pick ones you think you might be interested in. That club could turn into a passion of yours, and the people you meet in clubs are people who you probably don’t have classes with.

Rule #3 - When a friend tells you something alone, assume it’s a secret.

Nothing is more embarrassing than blurting out, “So how long have you and Sara been dating? Really? That’s weird. I wonder why she has a notebook full of pictures of you if you’re not dating. Oh, wait. That’s why she told me when no one else was there.”

The girl blushing bright red in the background, that’s Sara. If you’re not sure whether something’s a secret or not, treat it like it is. It’ll save you many friendships.

Rule #4 - Start your community service now.

If you forgot everything else, remember this. Start volunteering now! You only have to do forty hours, which should be a piece of cake. You need community service to walk the stage at graduation and it’s the saddest reason not to. I know what you’re thinking, “Oh it’s fine. I’m a freshman. I’ve got four years.” I know seniors struggling to complete their hours. You need to start now.

Rule #5 - Enjoy it.

Freshman year takes some time getting used to, but once it’s gone, it’s gone, and you don’t get a break until the third quarter of senior year. It is the easiest year you will have here. So sit back and relax because after this year, you won’t be able to do so for another three.

Best of luck!
