The boys soccer team has enjoyed a long history of success, making the playoffs nine consecutive years and being at the top of their division. But the regular success that the team has enjoyed for nearly a decade might be in jeopardy this year. After losing an estimated three-quarters of last year’s Varsity team to graduation, the team will almost certainly have a rough road ahead of it.

“This is probably the weakest group I’ve had in six years.” said Coach Gabriel Orozco. “We will be replacing six to seven starters.”

Youth and inexperience will be the biggest demons for this year’s team. In what is probably a rebuilding year, a year to bring in young talent and prepare them for next year, Coach Orozco is excited about the talent level of his ninth grade players.

“I’m really enthusiastic about the ninth graders this year,” Coach Orozco explained, “We have six very talented freshman players. Hopefully we can put one or two on JV this year.

Skill wise there are two of them that could be on Varsity this year, but they are not physically ready.”

The team still has a significant chance to make the playoffs this year, but must work hard because they lack a true superstar.

Two starters from last year, Seniors Robert Sanchez and William Campos will make up the strongest and most veteran positions on the young team.

With a little bit of luck, hard work, dedication, and the fact that Los Angeles High School, one of the best teams from last year, has changed into the Coliseum League, Uni could make the playoffs for a tenth year in a row.

The team will be practicing and training until the season starts in late November. The team’s overall goal for the season is to make the playoffs.
