Despite a shaky start to their league play, the girls’ basketball team is hoping to finish their season on the right foot and earn a playoff seed.

The LadyCats dropped a nail-biter to the Westchester Comets on Jan. 14, missing several important free throws down the stretch to lose by a score of 58-56. Senior guard Kimberly Roberts lead the Cats with 21 points and 9 rebounds, but her team was unable to hold off the relentless Comet attack.

On Wednesday, the LadyCats faced off against dangerous Fairfax. The girls were able to keep up with Fairfax until the fourth quarter, thanks to junior forward Jasmyne Sharp’s 19 points and 17 rebounds, but the Lions eventually pulled away to seal a 66-51 victory. Fairfax forced 28 LadyCat turnovers, which made it very difficult for Uni to keep up.

“Our play since the break has been sub-par,” said Roberts. “We have been too passive offensively and—most importantly—on the defensive end. Once we get that killer instinct, we will be fine.”

Every player needs to get involved for the team to succeed, whether their contribution is scoring, strong defense, or keeping the team’s morale up.

Roberts is confident that the team will be able to pick up their game before playoffs begin.

“Champagne [Jones] has been effective for us in the front court,” said Roberts. “Her reckless box-outs allow us to rebound the ball and run the game how we like to.”

Fortunately for the LadyCats, there are six games remaining on the schedule and all are against teams that they have already faced. Roberts believes every game is winnable.

“Now that we’ve played each team once, we will be able to adjust to their play and come away with wins,” added Roberts.

The LadyCats will look for a much-needed win today at LACES. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m.
