BUN IN THE OVEN: Ellen Page and Michael Cera star in “Juno,” the movie about teen pregnancy that is charming audiences everywhere. -

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that charms audiences and critics alike.

Juno is a quirky comedy about a 16 year-old teenager who unintentionally becomes pregnant, and despite the advice of others, goes through with the pregnancy.

Now to the average moviegoer, the topic of teen pregnancy does not necessarily seem to fit in the category of comedy, but Juno is a refreshing, witty film that gives a humorous perspective to an otherwise touchy subject.

The film’s young stars, Ellen Page (Hard Candy, X-Men 3) and Michael Cera (Superbad, Arrested Development) do a wonderful job portraying the quirky, sarcastic, somewhat awkward uniqueness of teenagers, which is what makes their characters so charming.

As opposed to feeling sorry for herself, Juno seeks humor in her situation, referring to herself at the “cautionary whale.”

The film depicts a real life teenager—armed with wisecracks, clever insults, a smart-mouth and surprisingly, a sensitive side.

The movie is devoid of any melodramatic nonsense that generally goes hand-in-hand with the issue of pregnancy and abortion.

Rather than take a moral standpoint, this film focuses on the life of the cynically humored Juno MacGuff and her personal decision to ignore the opinions of others and just do her own thing. Equipped with clever dialogue by screenwriter Diablo Cody and brilliant directing by Jason Reitman, Juno is the little film that could.

Starting out as a low budget, under the radar indie flick, Juno has made a quick rise to the top, coming in at number 2 in the box office, earning a total of $15.9 million this past weekend.

With $52 million already in the bank, Juno is following in the ranks of fellow Fox Searchlight films Little Miss Sunshine and Sideways, as one of its biggest hits ever.

Juno is a refreshing, idiosyncratic film that serves as the perfect anecdote for the predictable teen movie and has won the hearts of moviegoers everywhere.
