By a slim margin of 2,026 votes, voters approved the controversial HISD bond proposal Tuesday.

The final tally was 43,584 for passage and 41,558 against.

The $805 million bond proposal sparked much controversy, mainly because some parts of the school district felt left out.

According to HISD spokesperson Terry Abbott, the passing of the bond was a victory for children.

“The election is over and the children have won,” Abbott said Wednesday. “It is tremendous for the lives of children – I mean it is $805 million for buildings, 24 new schools and the renovation of 134 schools.”

Supporters argued that Houston schools desperately need the $90 million in secruity upgrades and $30 million in improvements to secondary science labs.

HISD Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra said that approval of the bonds would not require a tax-rate increase.

HISD officials also plan to increase security and create science labs at every middle and high school.

The measure met strong opposition from some black leaders, who said it would shortchange their schools, and neighborhoods.
