Venice High's boys tennis season starts Feb. 28 against Culver High at Culver. They have a preseason scrimmage against Cathedral High here at Venice High on Feb. 27 at 2 pm.
They started practicing on Feb. 13th. This year the team is going to have around 14-17 players. This is Coach Michael Finegold's first year coaching the boys' tennis team because the previous coach, teacher Randy Chew, can't coach anymore due to bad knees.
Coach Finegold says the reason there are fewer players is that many didn't make grade requirements. There aren't many returning players. Some of the few are captains Daniel Kim and John Gozal.
"[They're] really nice guys, but we need to practice a lot because we lost many players," said Coach Finegold.
The team this year is very young. The only senior is Kim and the only junior is Gozal.
In addition to losing players to academic ineligibility, some of the past year players didn't return because they transferred out of Venice or they just don't want to play any more, said Coach Finegold.
