Do you think suicide doesn’t happen all too often? Think again! Suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescents ages 15-24. That’s more than the homicide rate, and twice as many suicide deaths than those due to HIV and AIDS!

This means lots of teenagers are choosing suicide to solve their problems. Why? Some of the main reasons given for suicide include: Strong feelings of stress, divorce or separation of parents, new family members, a new community, peer pressure of bullying and sexual or physical abuse in the home or other places.

How can you help a friend or family member considering suicide? First, tell someone who may be able to help that person. Symptoms or signs of suicide are apparent, but often overlooked. Pay attention to your friend’s or loved ones’actions, moods and appearance and talk to them about any concerns you may have. Some symptoms include changes in sleeping habits, being bored a lot, difficulty concentrating, changes in personality and appearance, a decline in school work, hints about suicide, and loss of interest in activities he or she once enjoyed. Talk to your friends about your concerns. You never know. A listening ear, warm heart, and the feeling that someone cares can easily save a life.
