The Lady Gondos basketball team finished off the regular season on Friday with a 57-38 blowout win over Westchester. The Lady Gondos jumpoed out to a 17-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, and never looked back. With the win, they finished off an undefeated league season, which saw them three-peat as Western League Champions.

The team now looks towards the City Section playoffs, where they ride a twelve game win streak into their first round match with Reseda.

One reason for the Gondos success this year, has been the point production from junior Marlee Rice and senior Shannon Nakmine, who average a combined 32.2 points per game. Rice has the second most steals in the city section, giving the Gondos many opportunities to score easy points in transition.

They officially clinched the Western League title with an 86-42 blowout of Palisades High on Feb 7. The Lady Gondos scored 50 points in the first half alone, which Coach Dominick Flores says it was the first time that he can remember that a Venice girls team has scored 50 points in a half

“I just gotta say wow,” he said as the first half came to a close. At halftime, Rice and Nakmine the Gondos leading scorers combined for 27 points, six more than the entire Palisades team. By the end of the game, Rice and Nakamine combined for 49 points.

Flores said that the team played like “a team on a mission,” and that the game was one of their best of the year. Flores said that everybody was working hard and for the most part making good decisions.

The Gondos traveled to LACES on Feb. 5 and beat the Unicorns by a convincing 58-49 score, although Flores said that it was a sloppy game by the team’s standards. The Gondos beat Uni on Feb. 2 by 10 points, which was one of their lower margins of victory this season.

The Gondos traveled to Fairfax on Jan. 30, and easily defeated the Lions 71-56. They hosted Hamilton on Jan. 26, blew out the Yankees 67-36.
