No homecoming game means no show for drum line and dazzlers
Advertising
The football team wasn’t the only group to suffer when the homecoming game was cancelled.

The game’s cancellation ended whatever hope the drum line and silver dazzlers had of performing on the field.

Our school’s decision not to have a marching band prevents these music and dance groups from performing at every football game. However, this year they had been assured by Principal Welker that they would be performing at the homecoming game regardless.

But now that the game has been cancelled, they’ve lost their chance.

Obviously there was little that could be done under these unique conditions. Wilma took its toll and caused severe rescheduling problems, including the rescheduling of the homecoming dance to Nov. 18.

And our school’s lack of a marching band is also nothing to point fingers about. Many students in the magnet music strand live too far away to be expected to stay the hours after school necessary for a marching band to be possible.

Yet, regardless of these uncontrollable circumstances, there should be some way to give the drum line and silver dazzlers another chance to perform.

The silver dazzlers practiced throughout the summer, anticipating some opportunity to show their act. They planned on playing at every football game, but found when the year started they’d be unable to without the marching band.

The drum line similarly worked at a routine for the game they believed they would perform at. About a week before Wilma hit, members of the drum line began mapping out a routine.

The administration should provide these groups another chance to perform, whether during upcoming pep rallies or throughout any of a normal day’s three lunches. More options need to be available.

These performances should remain for the years to follow as well. Otherwise there will always be the chance that the work of these performing groups will go unnoticed.
