Age and long commutes have taken a toll on veteran security guard Theresa Champion. As of Feb. 24, she resigned from her post.

Champion worked at Krop since 1998 and earned admiration for her dedication to the school.

“She cared about everybody,” head security guard Chris Garcia said. “Students, teachers, co-workers. Everybody.” Champion was reluctant to leave the many friends she has made over the past eight years.

“There’s nothing but love here,” Champion said.

“We’re going to miss her. She’s part of our family,” Garcia said.

She now works much closer to her home, at Rainbow Park Elementary School.

The long early-morning commutes to Krop were increasingly difficult for Champion, whose vision is deteriorating.

“Mrs. Champion will not easily be replaced,” librarian Martha Marrero said.
