Krop’s 2005 Silver Knight nominees were announced Tuesday, Nov. 16, for the county-wide competition at the end of the year.

The Silver Knight Scholarship Program, started in 1959 by the former Miami Herald publisher John S. Knight, is a program dedicated to honoring high school seniors who show a devotion to community service. Since the program’s initiation, over 18,000 students have been recognized for their outstanding community efforts.

Every year, nominees from Krop are selected in a number of categories (now 15) to participate in a countywide search for the most dedicated to the community.

This year’s nominees from Krop are Jamilah Abdul-Sabur (Art), Jonathan Aronoff (Athletics), Joanna Satin (Business), Akeem Davis (Drama), Harley Gould (English and Literature), Jackie Flores (Foreign Language), Shannon Knee (General Scholarship), Jenna Masaracchio (Journalism), Nicholas Araujo (Mathematics), Stephanie Pan (Music), Johnny Darrisaw (New Media), Parajata Mackey (Science), Vanecie Delva (Social Science), Jennifer Rafferty (Speech) and Johnathan Eligon (Vocational-Technical).

The nominees chosen from Krop were selected by a committee of Krop’s teachers and administrators. Each nominee was chosen based on previous involvement and dedication in and to the community and potential to expand community involvement.

The final applications will be reviewed in May by judges specialized in each category to determine the one winner and three honorable mentions in each category.

In the past, Krop has turned out a number of winners and honorable mentions in a number of categories. This year is expected to be no different.
