The Weekend before Cinco de Mayo, select Spanish Club members Renee Looney, Lorena Ordonez, Sophany Thach, Elizabeth Heartly, Nancy Perez, Stephen Calixtro, Landon Lancaster, Nick Johnson, Andrea Johnson, Macy Brown, Emily Boyd, and Katie Burleson traveled to San Antonio. On Saturday, May third, they started off early with a trip to the Alamo to take in some rich historical background and look at artifacts. After that they spent some time in a mall nearby to have lunch. On the way back to the hotel, Looney and Ordonez were lucky enough to catch the Immigration Reform Parade. “It was actually really neat,” says Ordonez, “They had guys in these cool feather costumes dancing around. It was kid of sad though too, because we saw young children parading by themselves because their parents had been deported.”

Later that night, members headed to Mi Teirra in the market square to have dinner. Thach states, “It was so cool. It was like I could just feel the culture seeping from the walls.” After spending some time in the market square, Senora Heidi Sheilds headed the pack to a street corner where a Spanish Band was performing. The students danced to the music with each other in the streets until after dark. Sheilds comments, “Dancing is a big part of Spanish culture. It was so great the kids got to that and participate in it.”

The last day of the trip on the way home, the whole crew got to spend the majority of the daylight hours having fun at Six Flags Feista Texas, “It was a great trip,” Spanish Club President Stephen Calixtro states, “we took a fun group along and had a blast. I can’t wait for next year.”
