The BCS has been dominated by two major conferences in the past years, the Big XII and the SEC. For the past 4 years, a SEC or Big XII team has won the National Championship and the two have a combined total of 23 Heisman Trophy winners. However, commentators and analysts are torn on which conference has the advantage.

The Big XII is controlled by major schools like UT, OU, OSU, KU, and Mizzou, but they have also had their surprises with OU losing to BYU in the season opener, and Texas Tech and OSU losing to the University of Houston. The Big XII conference had 5 schools ranked in AP’s Top 25 for the preseason and now after week 6 there are 6 schools with No. 3 Texas remaining the highest in the conference. The conference is known for its high-scoring offenses and the use of the no-huddle plays, but some believe that the Big XII only focuses on defense and that the conference sacrifices too many points with the hopes of an immediate score answer. Colt McCoy represents the Big XII and the University of Texas in the race for the Heisman in 2nd Place behind the SEC’s and Florida’s Tim Tebow who leads by 16.7-points.

The South Eastern Conference or SEC is led by the flagship schools Florida, LSU, and Alabama, and has a surprising Auburn that is 5-1 for the season. The SEC and Big XII both have 2 undefeated schools. The SEC is said to be better-rounded, competitive, and a more defensive style of play. The SEC offers a different style of play that tries to balance the defense and offense when pursuing their victories. The SEC had 5 schools ranked in the AP’s Top 25 preseason poll and after week 6 there are 4 schools still ranked in the top 25. The defense of the SEC makes for lower scoring games, but that does not hinder the competition. Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators lead the SEC, and are ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Gators are pursued by the newly No. 2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Big XII and SEC are both well respected conferences that do not disappoint the fans. Audiences are guaranteed to an exciting and intense matchup in both scenarios. The debate over the better conference will not end soon, and the choice comes down to the viewer’s preference of style and game plan.
