On October 12, 2009, about fifty members of the Teague High School Stuco traveled to Midway High School for the annual District Student Council Convention.
On arrival to the school, the student councils were lead to the theater, where the Convention was brought to order by the president school of district six, Midway High School. Several guest speakers including Baylor announcer John Morris discussed the current theme for Student Council, the time is now, and encouraged the students to stay evolved in student government. After hearing several excellent speeches, the roll was called. Roll call is when each school presents themselves with a creative cheer or chant. This year Teague’s chant was created by Andrea Johnson, Markesha Warren, and Antwond Burrell. The chant was started off with a few musical students’ beats, and then followed by an original chant. After roll call, the students participated in the infamous Stuco clap, a series of claps and “Hey Stuco! Give me[s]”.
The district six student councils were then lead back to the cafeteria, where they socialized with other schools, met new people, listened to music, visited the booths around the edges of the room, and waited for lunch to arrive. Several of the booths stationed in the cafeteria contributed supplies for the student council members. Many students went home with dozens of pens, pencils, and notepads with the logo “Drink. Drive. Go to Jail.”
Following lunch, the round table discussion leaders set up there visual aids and prepared their presentations. The Dj then played a song for several minutes and gave the students time to go to one of the 14 tables. Once the music stopped, the discussions began. Each table had a different topic, way, or idea that the student government could accomplish something for their school, a charity, or for the environment. The round table discussions varied from being a junior camp counselor to starting a new organization such as CSI (community service involvement). The Teague Stuco officers had two table discussions. First Vice President Elizabeth Hartley and President Taylor Hamilton led the fundraising discussion and presented ideas such as powder puff football, concession stands, and powder puff volleyball to the other schools. Historian Allison Monks, Second Vice President Maysel McSwane, and Secretary Sarah Waldrip led the icebreakers discussion.
After four visits to different round table discussions, the day was led to a close by door prizes. Candy, helium balloons, t-shirts, and pretzels were given away to numerous lucky student council members with winning tickets. Several tickets were called that belonged to Teague Stuco members.
After a long day, the student councils of district six loaded up on their buses to return to their hometowns and their schools. Teague’s Student Council left with pictures, door prizes, pens, new friends, great memories, and new ideas to jump start the student council’s plans for this year.
