Dean Erie Lugo called many juniors down to the multipurpose room May 18 to inform them that they had passed the High School Proficiency Assessment. Juniors said they had been stressing since taking the test in March over whether they had passed or not. The long wait had a happy ending for many juniors and the school.

Lugo said that this year’s HSPA scores for both language arts and math were higher than those of the year before. He declined to provide the exact percentages of students who passed because the figures wouldn’t be official.

“From my analysis [of the scores], the results from this year’s HSPA were better than the last,” Lugo said.

After finding out their results, many of the juniors celebrated and relaxed. Junior Daniel Lemise said he had earned an advanced proficient and felt relieved after learning his score.

“I feel enlightened. It feels as if a weight has been lifted,” Lemise said.

In a survey conducted by The Student Voice after the juniors had received their results, slightly more than half of the juniors said that the HSPA preparation the school provided helped them perform well on the test.

Ten out of 16 juniors who were surveyed said they did not expect the grade they received. Junior Miguel Molin said he thought he would have either failed or barely passed.

“It was actually better than what I had expected,” Molin said.

Joseph Rojo said he expected to fail, but was happily proven wrong.

“I somewhat expected to pass; this whole time I thought I was going to fail,” Rojo said.

English III teacher Amina Farah said, “she always knew the students could pass the HSPA,” and “the materials I taught helped them prepare.”

“I think the reason the score is jumping is because the students are being more confident after each year and master the test,” Farah said. “They have to be the aggressors and take control of the HSPA, instead of it controlling them.”
