Freshman runners train hard to set new track records Friday, February 03, 2012 By Tyteonna Emanuel & Sabrina Cartagena [ArticleImageHyperLink] Advertising Four track team freshmen won the Freshmen Mile Relay Race at the City Championships  January 24. Their time was 4:08.2, a new freshmen record for the school. Coach Frederic Williams said he believes that the freshmen are making good progress and had anticipated the race. Freshman Kwesi Owusu, anchor in the relay race, said he felt “wonderful and exhausted” after the race, and that he expected to win it. “We had a great team behind us and we practiced hard,” Owusu said. Also at the City Championships, freshman Miguel Perez finished sixth overall in freshman shot put, with a personal best of 30 feet, 8 inches. Freshman Jordan Matos ran in a relay race January 10, which set a school record of 1:56.8.  Matos said he believes that Williams is a good coach. “Coach [Williams] pushes us the right amount,” Matos said. Freshman track runner Miguel Perez said that the team has been training hard. “The season was pretty good,” Perez said. “We had weeks of training and an outstanding coach.” Freshman William Albright, who also ran in the Freshman Mile Relay Race, said that the team would improve “if everyone gets to practice on time and listens to the coach.” Owusu said that although track is challenging, it’s a “great activity to do after school.” “It’s worth it because then I win races,” he said. Next on the team’s winter track agenda is the Hudson County Individual Championships in February.
