With many close games and an overtime with Weehawken, the Lady Generals closed the season off with seven wins and 13 losses.

According to team captain Amber West, who has been on the team for four years, the basketball team has improved due to the players knowing each other so well.

"The bond the senior girls have in knowing each others strengths and weaknesses as well as backing each other up is what helps us communicate more during the game," West said.

Point guard Talianda Abernathy, senior, also expressed positive views on how the team functioned.

"Communication on the court and simply talking [off the court] is something we improved on," Abernathy said.

Senior Keseanna Bryant said she feels that, during her time on the team, her defense has gotten better.

"The seniors really put in work this year," she said. "[We] are trying to help other players and [were] motivated since it is our last year playing for the team."

Senior Iashia Mitchell said she played with more focus this year.

"My focus changed from the help of Bruce and my teammates, putting me on track and focusing on the games more," Mitchell said.

Coach Michelle Bruce agreed that the team has been different this year.

"Finally, the girls got along with each other, which helped them on the court," Bruce said.

According to Bruce, the Lady Generals shared a "special experience" this year when they participated in the tournament to raise money for a cure for breast cancer. She said it made her feel "warm inside" to see her girls socialize and cheer for the other teams they were competing against.

Despite four seniors leaving the team, Bruce has high hopes for next year. The new additions, freshmen Ziyadah Williams and Shakira Lagette, made a good contribution to the team, she said.

"The remaining girls will have to work hard and step up," Bruce said.

According to Williams, the seniors had a positive effect on the younger players.

"They made us feel comfortable," she said. "It was a fun learning experience."

Lagette agreed that the seniors' departure is going to affect the team.

"Hopefully the freshmen and other players have a focused mind to make the team better," she said.
