The end of the school year is coming up, but so is the start of a new season for Boys Varsity Volleyball. Coach Phelan has been coaching the team for six years now at and has high hopes for this year’s team.

“Last year our record was 10 - 12, but our new team is going to make a big change on how our record is going to be this year,” said Coach Phelan. There are 8 seniors in the team of 12, five of them are starting and six players on the court. “They have chemistry and confidence and get along with each other not only as a team but also as friends in the off season.”

This year the team has a goal to win districts. Boys Varsity Volleyball has to be in the top four to place to go to districts. Last year Varela was the 4th seed and went against the 1st seed Westminster Christian, in which Varela came up short. Westminster took it to later win districts.

“We have a good chance this year to place in the top two in districts. Many schools have new players in the team because their seniors graduated. We only graduated 5 so we have many returning players this year. Coral Reef is our main and biggest competition. They had a talented team last year and they have many returning players,” said Coach Phelan.

“I am going to give it my best, 100% training in practice and 100% hard work during the game,” said Edgardo Rosa, senior and captain of the team. “I know the team is going to give its full 100% during practice and game time. We are not going to let a defeat bring us down. The team has bonding. We know that one of our teammates won’t drop the ball. We have codes and signals to tell each other to know what is going to happen,” he said.
