“It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” by Ned Vizzini, gives a funny twist to the disorder many students suffer from today known as depression. The main character Craig Gilners, who once believed that he was one of the brilliant and unique few, just got accepted into one of the most prestigious high schools in New York, Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School.

Soon after attending the school, Craig’s life starts spinning and he quickly finds out that he wasn’t as smart as he thought and maybe a little worse. Being prescribed Zoloft fixed the problem right away, until Craig decided that he felt better and no longer needed medicine. Big mistake.

Soon he finds himself falling down a hole and getting mixed up in drugs, homework, and over all life, but in the end, he signs himself into a mental ward.

Ned Vizzini wrote this book after being released from a mental ward, so the book has a first hand view of what it feels like. Luckily for Craig, he meets some people that he can truly call his friends and in the end, overcomes his battle with depression.

This book is filled with ups and downs and the low points in Craig’s life. If the book wasn’t so funny you’d end up getting teary eyed wondering if you suffer from the same problem. However, “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” lives up to its title and will have you laughing all the way to the end.
