Just like other areas of the school, Varela’s administration has seen a change this year. Two of the assistant principals have left to accept positions as principals at other schools.

Ms. Carol Wright left for Horace Mann Middle School and Mr. Rafael Villalobos left for Hammocks Middle School. Mr. Villalobos had been with Varela since its opening six years ago.

To fill in the administration positions are a seasoned Viper and a baby Viper. Ms. Nery Fins, who has been here for all 6 years of Varela as an English teacher and Academy Leader, has been teaching for 23 years and decided to go into administration in order to work with students through a more helpful means.

Coming from Riviera Middle School, Mr. Nelson Boronat wanted to work at Varela because of its “excellent reputation.” He also wanted a “chance to work in a high school environment.” Mr. Boronat chose to be an administrator since the very beginning in order to handle lives in a broader sense than just the selected few in the functions of a classroom.

Ms. Fins will be in charge of the ESOL, English and Visual Arts departments. Mr. Boronat will be in charge of the Performing Arts, Vocational and ESE departments.
